AUTHORED BY Nathanael Totushek

I am writing to convince you that “Doll vs All of the Rest of the World” is worth a dollar. If you are already convinced, stop reading and buy now.

That said, let me just parenthetically add that (it is also worth more than that). But I will at this time only be proving its dollar worthness, and doing so beyond ‘the shadow of a doubt’.

For starters, ‘Doll’, as we’ll thusforth be referring to it, despite its delicious full title, is a commentary on the human condition. It is nothing less, but it is so much more. For example, it is an enigma; a riddle shrouded in mystery, posed in the form of music. The words of this song, some of which are–but are not limited to–’the doctor’, ‘wall’, ‘authenticity’, ’she’, and ‘with’, flow out of this song much like lava flows down the side of a mountain: Beautiful to look at, impossible to approach, changing everything upon–and sometimes even before contact.

‘Doll’ is also full of haunting melodies that satisfy the deep hunger left by its tantilizing subject matter. I would direct your attention to one in particular, that ‘doo, da da doo, doddly-daa, dee dee dee dee daaaaah’ part, but pure text doesn’t do it justice, so I won’t. Short of posting the musical score, which would be impossible since it’s not written down, and would violate a number of intellectual property morals I try to uphold on a daily basis, all I can really do is present you with a picture:

Now, that is just one interpretation of the lyrics. Of course there are literally thousands of different types of dolls out there. This was merely meant to illustrate the following point: buy the song.

Now beyond that irrefutable reasoning, I will finally appeal to the most basically and rigidly pragmatic music lover inside of you. I will assume that you are reading this sentence. We will take that as a given. Now, being that you have arrived at this one, I think we can comfortably conclude that you are still reading, and by a leap of logic, I will infer that you have probably read all of the preceding words. If that is, as I hold it to be, the case, and unless you have been cutting corners (ie. skimming or speed-reading), I will postulate at last that you have been at this particular website for at least thirty seconds. Thirty seconds and counting.

And counting…

Now, a great deal can happen in thirty seconds. They say a new baby is born every minute. So, in the time you have been reading, let’s take a moment to absorb the idea that in the time that you have been reading, at least–and I emphasize LEAST–half of one baby has been born. Don’t you owe it to yourself, and that partially-born child, to make it worth the time? For goodness sakes, what if something had gone wrong during one of those thirty precious seconds, and YOU WERE’nt THERE TO HELP? Would you ever forgive yourself if you didn’t at least follow through with the simple paypal transaction? That’s only another thirty seconds, which could mean the difference between a baby being born, and not. Would you want to have that on your conscience for the rest of your life?

I’ll leave that question open-ended, only hinting that the answer might be found toward the end of “Doll vs All of the Rest of the World.” Convinced? Buy now. Have a great day.

Due to my killer ReverbNation stats (top <del datetime="2009-06-05T13:46:56+00:00">300</del> 100 on the pop charts, baby!), I have been offered to take part in ReverbNation’s brand-new and very exclusive program called Sponsored Songs. Very few artists are invited into this program so it’s a great honor!

Sponsored Songs is a cutting-edge way of paying artists by advertising in the album artwork of an mp3. What this means for us is that you get to download songs for free, and I get paid for each download.

So, today’s song will be a sponsored song. The song will not be available to download until June <del datetime="2009-06-10T14:52:33+00:00">10th</del> 24th - for now, check out the sample.

EDIT (added Wednesday, June 10th, 10:54am EST): The song will be sponsored by Microsoft Windows®. In addition to compensating artists for downloads, Windows will be promoting this program - to drive music fans to learn more about the music available to them - via marketing campaigns at MySpace, Facebook, and Twitter. In their own words, “…this pilot program with ReverbNation is an exciting new way to engage audiences, and we hope we can play a role in transforming music distribution online while ensuring fair compensation for artists.”

Daily Song has suddenly got very popular even though I haven’t been doing anything different.

So, I got contacted by my web hosting people. They tell me that I’ve been pushing a few gigabytes of mp3’s every day for months, but that recently they’ve seen a significant increase in traffic to my Daily Song website.

So I told them that I thought that was great news. They said that that’s one way of looking at it. Another way of looking at it is that you need a dedicated server.

And then they told me the price of such a server. After laughing.. and crying, I decided that the easiest solution here is to scrap the Daily Song Blimp and have my mp3’s hosted for free somewhere else.

So, I contacted the owner of Reverbnation and got them to lift the 100-song limit so that I could carry out Daily Song there.

Sadly, we must say goodbye to the blimp. On the plus side, the Daily Song website will not be slow anymore! I guess it makes sense though, have you ever seen a real blimp? They go so slow. GOODBYE BLIMP, we will miss you!

P.S. Sadly, the number of plays achieved through the blimp (50,000+) are not counted in the number of plays displayed on the new reverbnation vinyl-version blimp widget. That’s OK though, just listen to some extra songs to make up for it!

walk in the front with people who have starved and thinned
sneakin out the back with those who’ve lied and sinned
i may say it in my own words
but mine is the same as your story
of one
sufferin’ under the same sun sun
we are undivided for the will of one inside said of one
sufferin’ under the same sun sun
of your remorse given to the source of one with its many names

takin’ with the users until they abstain
runnin’ with the hunted until they are slain
crawl with the disabled and the lame
it’s all the same
just many names of one
sufferin’ under the same sun sun
we are undivided for the will of one inside said of one
sufferin’ under the same sun sun
of your remorse given to the source of one with its many names
